Wikipedia Traffic Down As AI Answers Rise
Wikipedia traffic declines as AI-generated answers gain popularity, signaling a major shift in how people search for and consume information online.
The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has reported a decline in the number of pages viewed by human users on Wikipedia in comparison to the previous year. This decrease comes after an upgrade to WMF’s bot detection system and also reflects changes in the ways people access information, particularly via AI-powered search engines as well as social media sites.
Changes in Traffic Data and Bot Detection
WMF discovered unusually high levels of traffic in May. The traffic initially appeared human, but later being attributed to bots that were designed to avoid detection.
Through the refinement of its bot detection algorithm, Wikimedia reclassified data from March to August, and found about a decrease of 8% in the number of page views by humans as when compared to the same timeframe in 2024.
WMF emphasizes that changing standards for detecting bots mean that the time-based comparison of traffic should be considered with care.
AI Search Impact on Wikipedia Visits
Marshall Miller, Senior Director of Product at WMF Marshall Miller, Senior Director of Product at WMF, traces this reduction in traffic to the rising importance of the generative AI and the social platform, which are changing the way that people search for information.
Search engines are increasingly providing immediate answers that are derived from Wikipedia content, but often without directing users to real Wikipedia pages.
In spite of declining traffic, Wikipedia remains a foundational source in AI systems. Research conducted by Profound on 680 million AI references found that Wikipedia has nearly 48% of ChatGPT’s top ten most frequently cited sources.
In the Google AI Overviews, Wikipedia holds about 5.7% share, which is less than platforms such as Reddit (21.0%) as well as YouTube (18.8%). Furthermore, Wikimedia reports a 50% increase in the amount of bandwidth used by AI bots that scrape content since January 2024. The bots collect information to help train algorithms for computer vision.
To accommodate the growing need, Wikipedia launched Wikimedia Enterprise in 2021. It provides access to commercially priced, SLA-backed services for large-scale data users, including search engines as well as AI developers.
Implications for Content Creators and Publishers
The decrease in referral traffic, despite the widespread Wikipedia references challenges the idea that content creators benefit from the power of AI responses.
WMF points out a gap where authoritative content drives AI answers, but it is not able to generate the appropriate engagement of users. Publishers should be attentive to the way AI search tools affect their traffic and assess whether they are able to translate their citations into meaningful interactions.
The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to keep improving bot detection and monitoring the way that the generative AI as well as social networks change data access practices.
Final Thought
Wikipedia remains an essential data source in the field of AI and search engines, even when direct visits are declining, similarly, indicating the same trends that the publishers face in general as AI-integrated search expands.
