TikTok Crosses 200 Million EU Users

TikTok Reaches 200 Million EU Users

TikTok crosses 200 million monthly users in the EU, solidifying its massive reach and influence as a key platform under the EU’s new digital regulations.

According to the company’s latest report, TikTok reached a significant milestone as for the first time, more than 200 million users in Europe log into the app every month.

Details Behind the Numbers

As TikTok states:

“More than 200 million people across Europe now come to TikTok every month to express themselves, be entertained, learn a new hobby or skill and find or grow a business. That’s up from 175 million people last year, and approaching a third of the population of the continent across the EEA and UK.”

The EU Digital Services Act (DSA) disclosure, released recently by TikTok, affects approximately 170 million EU monthly users, specifically within the European Union. It’s the U.K. users who push the total over 200 million.

The total monthly active users in this figure include those in the EU and an additional 30 million in the U.K., which is no longer part of the EU but is still included in the region-wide total.

TikTok’s Growth Amid U.S. Market Challenges

Especially significant is the European milestone, coming as the platform is under threat of a ban in the U.S., where TikTok is its largest single market, with more than 170 million users.

The U.S. is also TikTok’s largest market in terms of revenue, and a major center of shopping activity integral to its monetization drive.

Getting dumped by the American market would be a significant blow. TikTok, on the other hand, is expanding its user base and introducing additional commerce features, thereby building upon its growing platform across Europe and elsewhere to mitigate those risks.

Economic Impact on European Businesses

TikTok emphasizes the support it provides to European businesses:

“There are now millions of businesses on TikTok across Europe. From sole traders to global brands, TikTok’s unique recommender system helps businesses reach new customers they could not find another way, without needing a huge following. Experts at Oxford Economics found that the activities of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) on TikTok added €4.8 billion to the economiesof Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands and Belgium and supported more than 51,000 jobs.”

Balancing Growth and Regulatory Concerns

TikTok has been immensely successful since its launch, although scrutiny over its ties to the Chinese government has led to ongoing regulatory challenges in numerous markets.

However, its further penetration in the EU enhances the platform’s forward-looking growth and immunity against geopolitical headwinds.

Bottom Line

With all these challenges, the fact that TikTok continues to expand its European footprint only confirms the platform’s significant influence in social media and digital commerce.
