TikTok Introduces Campus Verification to Help Connect College Students
TikTok introduces its brand-new Campus Verification program, designed to help connect college students with their peers on campus.
As the new school year is coming up, TikTok has announced a new feature designed to help students in college get connected with their fellow students on the application. The feature is called Campus Verification. This tool allows users to connect their college campuses to the profiles of their TikTok profiles, providing an easy way to connect and connect with their classmates from the same school year.

As shown in these example screens, Campus Verification enables students to connect with others on campus and find information about peers in their same year.
Campus Verification Requirements
The Campus Verification will require students to prove their identity by utilizing their university email address, despite the fact that email verification is not 100% foolproof.
Also, TikTok is partnering with the student authentication platform UNiDAYS to provide a second layer of identity verification.
Once verified, students can explore their school’s dedicated page, filter by graduation year, and discover classmates. It highlights top-followed peers and helps foster community connections early in the academic year.
Supporting Students Through Key Transition
TikTok insists its feature’s purpose is to ease the sometimes difficult transition into college and suggests:
“This fall, millions of Gen Z students will set foot on campus for the very first time. For parents, you’ve packed the car, stocked up on snacks, and given the ‘call me if you need me’ speech. What every parent wants is for their teens to find friends in those first few weeks. Research shows the first weeks on campus are a make-or-break period for forming social connections that can shape a student’s entire college experience.”
Due to the increased presence of students who share interests and details on TikTok, Campus Verification could be an effective social bridge, helping students who are new to the area find acquaintances and feel more in their own space.
Future Challenges
Although the idea is not exactly new, Meta also launched a similar “Facebook Campus” feature in 2020 that was hampered by limitations like expansion and non-student access that was not authorized, which led to its demise.
The rollout of TikTok, which covered the 6,000 U.S. universities at launch, is more extensive than the initial coverage of Facebook Campus, but it also poses additional enforcement issues.
The safety of students and limiting access to only genuine students are crucial for the success of the feature. TikTok has a major challenge of balancing access to all users with security and privacy protections.
Final Thoughts
TikTok’s Campus Verification represents a strong commitment to promoting socialization among students through its platform. While it provides an opportunity to connect, however, it will examine the company’s ability to keep an accurate, secure verification system at scale.
