Threads Trials In-Stream Text Expansion for Longer Updates

Threads Tests In-Stream Text Expansion for Longer Updates

Threads is currently trialing in-stream text expansion, which lets you compose longer updates by going past its character limit without leaving your feed.

Threads is also trying a new format of longer sharing of its content by offering a custom text editor, which adds an extended text box to regular updates. This enables creators to extend their postings into longer articles with ease without polluting the main feed.

New Text Editor Overview

Having the new page icon in their posting options, a user who has access to the feature will see it displayed as shown in these examples, as posted by the apps researcher, Robert Nickson.

Not all users have access yet, but when available, you will notice a new page icon among your in-app posting options.

Clicking on this icon will bring up an info pop-up about the update.

From there, it will open a larger text editor window, which looks more like a blog post editor, with increased space and text formatting features.

This model is similar to a previous experiment by Twitter, that is, Articles, where the company intended to offer a native means to share longer written content on the service instead of using screenshots of Notes or similar applications.

After the change in leadership, Twitter (since renamed X) has re-emphasized extending in-stream post length, which lets paying users post up to 25,000 characters, as well as a separate paid Articles feature aimed at publications and creators of long-form content.

Threads Take on Long-Form Posting

The new text editor of Threads provides an alternative to posting richer content without breaking the short-form feed format of the application.

Although this is in some way opposite to the idea of Threads of conversation and short posts, it responds to an increasing user need to add more context and nuance to the platform.

Looking Forward

This is the expanded text capability that Threads is currently testing with a limited number of users. It is a promising addition, particularly among authors who want to combine shortness with infrequent, detailed descriptions. Since many users would like to be clearly understood, this can improve communication on Threads.
