YouTube Introduces New CTV Display Updates, Including AI Upscaling

YouTube Adds New CTV Display Updates

YouTube introduces new CTV display updates, including AI upscaling that improves the quality of videos and viewing experience on larger screen sizes.

YouTube has released a number of new updates that aim to help creators increase engagement and improve content quality on connected TV (CTV)

With every day CTV watching time exceeding 1 billion hours and short viewing on TV increasing by a third in the past one year, YouTube has been focusing on improvements that are geared towards the increasing viewers who prefer to relax in their living rooms.

YouTube’s Dominance in Connected TV

Based on Nielsen statistics, YouTube has become the top streaming platform in terms of watching duration across the U.S., rivaling Netflix and Disney+ combined.

The success of its viewers is proof that YouTube invests heavily to improve the CTV experience and giving creators with more tools to reach an increasing viewership in a home-based viewing environment.

Bigger, Sharper Thumbnails and Immersive Channel Previews

YouTube will increase the size of thumbnails uploaded to YouTube from 2MB to 50MB making it possible for creators to show stunning title cards with 4K resolutions for their videos on huge screens.

According to YouTube:

“Soon, we’ll expand the thumbnail file limit from 2MB to 50MB, allowing us to generate and serve new, stunning 4K-resolution thumbnails for creators’ videos. We’ve begun testing larger video uploads with select creators as well to enable even higher quality original uploads.”

This update allows creators to showcase their content in a more dynamic way and arrange videos to provide more efficient CTV experience.

Additionally, YouTube is introducing “immersive previews” where videos play automatically on the background of homepages for channels on CTV and are overlayed with UI icons to make navigation easy.

Enhanced Content Discovery and Viewer Engagement

Results from searches initiated by the creator’s channel that is on CTV will now place those videos on that channel on top, increasing retention of content and reducing distractions from other channels.

YouTube’s improving content discovery as well:

“When a viewer initiates a search from a creator’s channel page, they will now see videos from the channel prioritized at the top of the results instead of getting lost in content from across all of YouTube.”

This update is intended to improve the engagement of viewers and ensure that they remain within the creator’s community.

QR Codes and Timed Product Displays

YouTube is also improving shopping experiences on CTV by incorporating QR codes that can be scanned within shopping videos.

This allows customers to browse and purchase items easily from their smartphones. They are currently testing “shoppable moments” that highlight items at specific times in videos, increasing conversion rates by linking intent to actions.

“We’re also starting to test the ability to feature products at specific, timed moments within videos.”

Videos that are related to shopping have accumulated 35 billion hours of watch time on YouTube in the last year, an amount that was boosted considerably by CTV viewers.

AI-Powered Upscaling for Improved Video Quality

One of the most notable additions are YouTube’s AI upscaling that improves low-resolution uploads so that they can be better suited to large screens by rendering videos in a higher resolution.

Although creators will gain more clear, less pixelated images, YouTube is also mindful of concerns from creators about distortions caused by AI. This has been built in from the beginning this time around:

“Creators will retain complete control over their library, as both original files and original video resolution will be kept intact, with a clear option to opt-out of these enhancements. And viewers will still be able to watch creators’ videos in the original uploaded resolution, as super resolution will be clearly labeled under settings.”

The current testing focuses on scaling SD videos that are below 1080p to HD and in the future, plans to support up to 4K resolution.

Balance between Innovation and Creator Control

YouTube’s method ensures that, while technological advances improve the user experience the creators are still in control of their content’s quality and presentation.

The option to opt-out of AI enhancements is based on learnings from previous creator feedback especially in relation to shorts.

Final Thought

These changes are part of YouTube’s effort to strengthen the position it holds within the CTV market by combining AI-driven improvements in quality with creator-friendly controls and improved monetization capabilities.
