Meta Upgrades Brand Rights Protection System To Improve Enforcement

Meta Updates Brand Protection

Meta announced major enhancements for the Brand Rights Protection system, improving enforcement capabilities to combat counterfeit products in addition to IP violations.

Meta has released a series of major changes for their Brand Rights Protection system, which aims to provide IP holders with more powerful oversight and enforcement tools on Facebook as well as Instagram.

These updates enable brands to report infringements more efficiently and encompass the full range of possible violations. This is a move that is appropriate as scams and e-commerce activity increase.

Expanded Reporting Tools

After months of beta testing, Meta has officially expanded its reporting tools. Businesses that are enrolled in Brand Rights Protection can flag suspicious scam advertisements in bulk, making it easier to streamline what used to be a laborious process.

Interestingly, companies can now demand action for ads that do not directly utilize their IP. With the new “Other” category, rights holders are able to highlight ads that appear fraudulent, even if they are not stealing the logo or content of a brand directly.

According to Meta, this choice includes:

“Ads that promote products, services, schemes or offers using deceptive or misleading practices, including those suspected to scam people out of money or personal information, and otherwise do not involve a rights holder’s intellectual property.”

Although it is a good idea but the reporting of direct theft is simple. Those scams in the grey area that take a smidgen of legitimacy from well-known brands can be the most harmful and challenging to eliminate.

Engaging industry insiders in identifying these scams can help Meta fill in those gaps that automated software could overlook.

Streamlined Takedown Requests

Meta has also made it easier to submit takedown requests. The new procedure reduces the number of steps needed to file a takedown request, allowing faster teams to submit complaints.

For those who are juggling multiple complaints, the new search options under the “Reports” tab should make it much easier to monitor the progress of cases and locate important information. Updated report status notes offer clearer explanations, something that many brand managers have been asking for.

These upgrades significantly improve Meta’s Brand Rights Protection Manager, making it a powerful solution to combat scams and fake brands.

AI Image Matching: Keeping One Step Ahead

One of the latest enhancements is AI-powered image matching. Companies can now upload images of their merchandise, and Meta’s algorithm will search for possible knock-offs or imitations across its applications.

With Meta firmly orienting itself towards online commerce and social networking, this kind of proactive security is long overdue and provides security as counterfeiters are becoming more creative.

Enforcement Delivers Results

The proof lies in the figures as Meta states that, in 2024 alone, it removed more than 157 million pieces of advertising material on Facebook and Instagram to prevent fraud and policies that were not in compliance.

It is not just automated working, rather it is also the communities and brands that are helping to create an environment that is safer for all.

Looking Forward

There is certainly an element of irony in this, as Meta is violating the rights of content IP holders to train its AI models. Meta, in this regard, has come under fire for using copyrighted work in the training of its AI models without permission. However, as experts, we are aware of the policies of platforms, and their enforcement is always in flux.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing for professionals working in search and e-commerce at the moment is that Meta offers new tools to keep brands safe and to ensure that the platform is trustworthy for legitimate businesses.
