Apple to Leverage Google Gemini AI for Siri Overhaul
Apple is set to leverage Google’s Gemini AI for Siri overhaul, to enhance personalization and overall intelligence across iPhone and iPad devices.
Apple is also working with Google on a massive overhaul of Siri. This behind-the-scenes collaboration entails Apple paying Google for its development of a bespoke Gemini AI model. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this will act as the underlying system that powers Sira’s next version set to debut around spring 2026, bundled inside iOS 26.4.
Apple to Leverage Google Gemini
Google’s Gemini won the place because of more favorable financial terms; internal evaluations found at Apple. Bloomberg says that the searches powered by Claude would have cost Apple over $1.5 billion a year more than it would have through Google equivalent.
The project codenamed “Glenwood,” involves Google’s AI handling key Siri functions such as query planning and summarization running on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
While Apple’s proprietary Foundation Models continue managing on-device personal data processing to maintain privacy.
Apple’s Discretion on Google’s Role
This partnership has not been publicized by Apple or Google. Apple expects to portray its stripped-down Siri as the result of its own innovation not one that has been developed elsewhere and licensed out to Apple for a price.
It even hopes to mask Google’s involvement, with Gemini’s offstage role hopefully going unnoticed by users. This approach compliments with the Apple Brand emphasizing a pure user experience not someone else’s branding.
Expected Characteristics and Larger AI Environment
The Gemini-powered backend is meant to make Siri way smarter with improved contextual awareness and query processing, reducing the need for external apps like ChatGPT.
Bloomberg reports Apple is targeting spring 2026 for the Siri overhaul as part of iOS 26.4.
Previous rumors also claim that Apple will launch a smart home display device to accompany the Siri overhaul and demonstrate its new skills.
Why It Matters
This relationship is potentially Apple’s most important partnership in the realm of A.I., given it allows them to infuse Google’s cutting-edge deep learning tech directly into the core functionality of Siri.
It also represents a pragmatic step toward combining best-of-class external AI technologies with Apple’s focus on user privacy and on-device data processing.
As Siri’s responses begin to happen more inside its own ecosystem, it might begin rewiring how AI credit and web traffic gets distributed.
Looking Ahead
Apple has already enabled ChatGPT access in Siri and Writing Tools as part of Apple Intelligence, and Anthropic says Claude is available to developers in Xcode 26. A Gemini deal would be Apple’s most significant AI pact to date, as it would influence core Siri features instead of secondary ones.
