What Is Grok 4?

Grok 4 is the latest version of xAI’s advanced AI technology, designed to handle both simple and complex queries efficiently. According to xAI, Grok 4 outperforms the top competitors in AI tests, including those from OpenAI and Meta; however, certain third-party testing contradicts this claim.

As announced by xAI:

“Grok 4 is now free for all users worldwide! Simply use Auto mode, and Grok will route complex queries to Grok 4. Prefer control? Choose “Expert” anytime to always use Grok 4. For a limited time, we are rolling out generous usage limits so you can explore Grok 4’s full potential.”

This announcement suggests that Users can use Grok 4 in two modes. First is the Auto mode, where the system can route complicated questions automatically, and the other is Expert mode, which gives greater control.

Grok 4 is currently offering large usage limits to allow users to fully experience the capabilities of Grok 4. After the trial period, any further use will require the purchase of X Premium or Grok.

Musk’s Strategy Behind Free Access

Elon Musk, owner of X and xAI, explained that the free access is limited to a number of daily queries, and subscriptions are required for long-term usage. This program is in addition to additional free AI features, such as “Imagine,” a text-to-video generator available to all users for free (for a limited time).

Musk’s overall strategy seems to be focused on boosting the company’s AI adoption and changing users into paying customers, which is necessary to cover the cost of developing and operating xAI’s tech stack.

Monetization and Long-Term Goals

While providing the free Grok 4 access may drive more users to X’s premium subscription levels, which are essential to fully benefit from its AI features. The truth is that these sophisticated tools have massive operating costs that come at a significant price tag. xAI requires a steady income to cover its billions of development costs and not just billionaire support.

Elon Musk could theoretically finance this venture on his own, given his wealth; however, the majority of the assets he owns are tied to company equity. In addition, as a business executive, Musk’s goal is to make profitable investments and not just create projects out of spite, in order to outdo his rivals.

Though considering Musk’s past with OpenAI, one might be wondering how much competition fuels these choices.

However, xAI must establish real ways to earn money. Offering AI for free is just the first step to justify the tens of billions that have already been sunk into its enormous infrastructure expenses.

xAI Eyes Government Deals for Revenue

Government contracts are still an effective way to monetise AI, using Elon Musk’s in-depth knowledge of U.S. federal systems to create a custom AI system to modernize bureaucratic processes.

Even though this route was in doubt following the discord between Musk and former President Trump, xAI secured a $200 million Defense Department contract soon after, proving its ability to withstand obstacles in the political landscape and profit from the demand from the defence sector for advanced AI.

Final Thoughts

Giving away Grok 4 for free taps into a tried and tested growth strategy that allows users to experience the value first, and then promote upgrading paths. As the fight between AI giants gets heated, the X strategy signals an intent to stay in the game.

However, converting trial users to paying customers and sustaining AI investments will be the key testing point. Currently, the opportunity to experiment with Grok 4 offers a timely chance to witness xAI’s capabilities in the real world.
