OpenAI Starts Testing Ads Inside ChatGPT for Free Users
OpenAI has begun testing ads inside ChatGPT.
The move marks a first for how sponsored content appears in the AI assistant.
The test is currently live in the United States. It applies to logged-in adult users on the Free and ChatGPT Go plans. Paid tiers remain ad-free.
Who Will See Ads?
Ads are shown only to:
- Free tier users
- ChatGPT Go subscribers
They do not appear for:
- Plus
- Pro
- Business
- Enterprise
- Education
OpenAI recently revealed that the Education accounts will also remain ad-free.
Those who are under 18 will not see ads. OpenAI says, these ads will also not appear in conversations that are related to health, mental health, or politics.
How The Ads Work?
Ads appear at the bottom of ChatGPT responses.
They are clearly labeled as “Sponsored” and separated from the main answer.
According to OpenAI’s blog announcement, ads are selected based on:
- The topic of your current conversation
- Past chats
- Previous interactions with ads
For example, someone asking about meal planning may see a grocery or meal kit promotion.
OpenAI says advertisers do not see personal conversations. They receive only aggregated data such as impressions and clicks.
Users can:
- Dismiss ads
- See why an ad appeared
- Turn off ad personalization
- Clear ad-related data
Free users can also opt out of ads. However, when doing this, it reduces the number of free daily messages. Go users can remove ads by upgrading to Plus or Pro.
Why is OpenAI Doing This?
OpenAI first revealed its ad plans in January during the U.S. launch of ChatGPT Go at $8 per month.
CEO Sam Altman wrote at the time that many people want to use AI but do not want to pay for it. Ads, he suggested, could help support broader access.
Financial context is also important here. CNBC reports that OpenAI expects to surpass a $20 billion annual revenue run rate by end of 2025. The company has also discussed long-term infrastructure commitments that could reach $1.4 trillion over eight years.
Adweek reported that early ChatGPT ad placements require a minimum commitment of $200,000. Digiday cited media buyers who were quoted roughly $60 CPM during the initial test.
CNBC also reported that ads are expected to account for less than half of OpenAI’s long-term revenue.
How Competitors Are Responding?
The timing stands out.
Anthropic recently ran a Super Bowl campaign with the message: “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.” Reuters and CNN reported on the campaign.
Google has also said it has no immediate plans to introduce ads inside its Gemini assistant, according to statements reported by Reuters and comments at Davos.
For now, OpenAI is the first major AI assistant provider testing conversational ads at scale.
What This Means for You?
ChatGPT now reaches hundreds of millions of users weekly. CNBC reported Altman telling employees that usage has hit roughly 800 million weekly users.
That scale creates pressure to diversify revenue.
How will users like you accept ads inside AI conversations will be the crux of all talk on the future of AI monetization. It will determine if contextual, non-intrusive ads can coexist with trust in AI assistants.
