YouTube Lets Users to Generate Alternative Endings for Shorts with AI

YouTube Enables Generate Endings for Shorts With AI

YouTube introduces a new AI feature that lets creators generate alternative endings for Shorts, enhancing creativity and engagement possibilities on the platform.

YouTube’s latest AI feature, “Extend with AI,” now allows Shorts creators to generate alternative endings to existing Shorts using artificial intelligence. This new function builds on the existing “Cut” remix option, integrating AI to offer creators creative suggestions for extending video content.

“Extend with AI” Overview

As described by YouTube:

“This new feature gives you creative suggestions to help you add a new segment to an eligible Short. All you need to do is pick a moment from a Short, select a suggested prompt that describes what you want to happen next, and create a new segment that you can use for your own Short. Your remixed creation becomes a new Short that you can share, while the original creator’s video remains the same.”

Users cannot freely design their own endings, but instead choose from AI-generated prompts tailored to the video segment they remix.

“To create, start by tapping ‘Remix’ from an eligible Short, then select ‘Extend with AI.’ Choose a video segment up to 5 seconds in length, then pick from the list of suggested prompts. The prompts are generated based on the video you choose to remix, so they offer creative suggestions tailored to your unique content.”

Content Creation Without Filming

Through this feature, creators can produce YouTube Shorts without needing to shoot any original footage. By extending existing content with AI-generated variations, users effectively become creators through selection rather than a “Choose Your Own Adventure” style AI video process.

“When you’re in the preview screen after your draft has been generated, you can add music from our curated list of audio tracks. You can also go back into the camera to add more videos by tapping the back arrow and then re-ordering clips in the editing screen. Most videos generated using Extend with AI will be around 8 seconds or less.”

While YouTube likely hopes this feature will fuel fresh viral content and new creative expressions, the reliance on AI-generated suggestions raises questions about the nature of creativity in digital spaces.

Like Meta’s recent AI video “Vibes” feed, this approach risks prioritizing ease and volume of content over authentic, human-driven creativity and original vision. Instead, it may contribute to a homogenized stream of AI-mutated clips, diluting artistic expression.

YouTube has announced that:

Extend with AI” will be gradually rolled out to all countries outside of the E.U. and U.K. “over the coming months.”

Bottom Line

Whether AI-assisted content expansion enhances or saturates the Shorts ecosystem remains to be seen. Still, the feature marks a notable step toward AI-driven content generation becoming mainstream on video platforms.
