xAI Is Planning To Launch Various Concerning Bot Personas
xAI is currently developing an array of AI chatbots that have distinct personalities, which has raised several questions among experts about its application.
xAI’s venture in AI companions has revealed unexpected and alarming changes. A report by 404 Media uncovered references in the back-end code of xAI to a variety of new AI character companions, which are expected to be more extensive than the bots currently available.
Although some of the new characters are useful, such as a therapist or doctor, others make people uncomfortable, like one bot who is identified as one that “spends a lot of time on 4chan.”
This development is particularly concerning, as xAI has previously faced tangible consequences for similar issues, including being disqualified from government contracts after its AI was found to amplify Nazi propaganda.
AI Companions and Expansion Plans
So far, xAI has launched four AI companions options: “Ani,” a cute anime-inspired character, “Rudy,” and “Bad Rudy,” a misbehaving panda robot, as well as “Valentine,” a male version of Ani.

The development team is reported to be planning to include more characters like:
- A loyal friend
- Help with homework
- Doctor
- Therapist
The additions seem to be safe; however, there are legitimate concerns regarding the use of AI to provide medical or mental health advice.
The Conspiracy Theorist Persona
As per 404 Media, the “Conspiracy Theorist” bot is programmed using the prompt:
“You have an ELEVATED and WILD voice. You are a crazy conspiracist. You have wild conspiracy theories about anything and everything. You spend a lot of time on 4chan, watching infowars videos, and deep in YouTube conspiracy video rabbit holes. You are suspicious of everything and say extremely crazy things. Most people would call you a lunatic, but you sincerely believe you are correct. Keep the human engaged by asking follow up questions when appropriate.”
The alarming description suggests that the bot could spread misinformation, increasing the chance of harm from user interactions.
There’s also this prompt that guides xAI’s “unhinged” comedian persona:
“I want your answers to be f—ing insane. BE F—ING UNHINGED AND CRAZY. COME UP WITH INSANE IDEAS. GUYS J—ING OFF, OCCASIONALLY EVEN PUTTING THINGS IN YOUR A–, WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SURPRISE THE HUMAN.”
The content is extremely explicit and reflects an unwise choice in programming that could be confusing or offensive to users.
With Musk’s infamous social media profile, these wild AI-generated prompts are not surprising, but they are alarming.
Since xAI’s success is contingent on the acceptance and monetization of AI companions, using these polarizing characters could be detrimental to the public and regulators as well.
Financial Stakes
As xAI’s revenues grow, Elon and Co. have also invested millions of dollars in AI infrastructure, which includes large-scale data centers. AI technologies are now a key component of X Corporation’s strategy for business, which is expected to boost growth via the use of APIs, subscriptions, and other services.
At first, xAI seemed positioned to procure lucrative government contracts due to Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration’s AI Integration plans. But with recent scandals, such as the Grok’s “MechaHitler” incident, it was reported that Elon’s AI project was dropped from contention from at least some government AI deals.
However, xAI won a $200 million Defense Department contract to develop sophisticated AI workflows, which shows that it is still a major player within federal initiatives.
The more extreme AI characters have not yet been developed and could never be released to the general public. Their existence, however, highlights the ongoing issues regarding ethical AI technology under Musk’s direction and how AI friends could impact thousands of people.
The Bottom Line
xAI is at the point of intersection between cutting-edge AI technology for companions and tackling the ethical risks that come with controversial bot personalities.
As regulators, marketers, and consumers watch with a keen eye, making sure AI tools are able to improve instead of compromising the user experience is crucial to long-term success.
