X Plans to Use Grok AI for User Age Verification

X User Age Verification

X is planning to utilize a new Grok AI age verification system in the wake of U.K. Online Safety Act.

This new age verification system would compel social platforms to verify user ages so as to prevent children from viewing harmful material. X is testing a new method to verify selfies, ensuring only adults can access sensitive content.

U.K. Online Safety Act and the Need for Age Verification

The Online Safety Act in the U.K. requires social media and search engines to take steps to prevent children from accessing harmful or age-restricted material. Consequently, every platform had to implement an age-verification mechanism to protect young consumers against age-restricted content in their apps.

Although X has opposed the regulation over allegations that it infringed on free speech, X seems to have realized that it must comply with the rule. Since other regions are considering such measures, it is likely that, even after beating the U.K. law in the courts, X will still have to carry out age-verification procedures, anyway.

How X’s Age Verification Process Will Work?

X had announced last month that it would be implementing a collection of new age-verification steps, including the cross-referencing of account information and subscription status, as well as two crucial methods:

  • Live Selfie for Facial Age Estimation: X will then use its AI, powered by Grok, to predict their age based on the image.
  • ID Verification: Users upload a photo of their driver’s license or state ID, and Grok takes it one step further to also provide an estimate on the user’s age.

Meta has outsourced its age verification tools to third-party providers, but X plans to handle age verification entirely internally using their own AI tools.

As shown in example screenshots shared by @swak_12 and X Daily News, X is developing a built-in selfie-based age verification process. It also states that X and xAI will utilize the selfie image for age verification purposes.

Another screenshot reveals that the age-verification system will be driven by Grok.

Potential Limitations and Concerns

X is confident that its Grok AI will be able to handle the new requirements; however, many are dubious of such systems’ accuracy. Apps such as those by Tinder and Badoo have seen users go to the extent of faking locations or identities, with third-party age verification checks being sidestepped using workarounds like VPNs.

According to Engadget:

“Savvy internet users are already circumventing the age checks by using a VPN, providing a fake ChatGPT-generated photo ID, or taking a high-quality selfie of video game characters.”

Why We Need A Single Standard?

The process of determining age faces a number of issues. Given its reliance on third-party systems specifically designed for this purpose, it’s challenging to believe the X Grok tool can significantly outperform others.

This highlights the necessity for approved, universal age checking provider process, which ensures that all platforms adhere to the same standards instead of each implementing its own unique method.

At present, the law isn’t clear on what this system could be legally enforced, especially when a platform shows that a competitor with more money has a distinct advantage in meeting the legal standards.

Final Thoughts

A solid and consistent approach is needed in order to best ensure the safety of young users. At the moment, this decision by X seems like an improvement toward the proper direction. However, more extensive measures are required to make a lasting impact.
