WordPress Gutenberg 22.7 Sets the Stage for AI-Assisted Publishing

WordPress Gutenberg

WordPress has released Gutenberg 22.7, which is the latest version of its block editor, bringing in a mix of usability upgrades and behind-the-scenes changes.

These help prepare the platform for AI-assisted publishing. While most of the updates focus on improving the editing experience today, the release also introduces early infrastructure that could support AI tools expected to arrive with WordPress 7 later in 2026.

The update includes several improvements aimed at both content creators and developers who build custom blocks for the editor.

More Control for Block Developers

One of the key changes in Gutenberg 22.7 offers developers more flexibility when working with Global Styles. Block developers can now define custom CSS selectors directly in the block.json file, allowing style rules to target specific elements inside a block rather than just the block’s outer wrapper.

Until now, Global Styles often applied only to the block’s root element-which is the outermost <div>-which limited how precisely styles could be applied.

With the new capability, developers can direct styles to inner elements such as links or spans within a block.

For blocks with complex internal layouts, this goes on to show that the update makes styling far more precise. This reduces the need for additional custom code.

Live Preview for Style Changes

Gutenberg 22.7 also improves how editors experiment with design changes. Core blocks such as Heading, Image, Paragraph, and Button now include a live preview for style variation transforms.

In practical terms, this means users can see how a style change will look before applying it. Instead of switching styles and undoing changes if they don’t work, editors get an instant preview in the editor itself.

The update also expands style variation previews to patterns running in “content-only” mode.

The change may seem small, but it helps streamline the editing process and reduces guesswork while formatting content.

New Connectors Page for AI Integrations

Alongside these workflow improvements, Gutenberg 22.7 introduces a new “Connectors” page in the WordPress admin area.

Located under Settings > Connectors, the page allows users to manage API keys and credentials used to connect WordPress with external services, including AI platforms.

The feature is currently marked as experimental, but it signals a clear direction. Developers can add their own connectors through extension hooks, potentially allowing plugins to link WordPress with a wide range of AI services.

Content Guidelines Aim to Guide AI and Writers

Another notable addition is the Content Guidelines feature, which introduces a way for site owners to define editorial rules directly inside WordPress.

The system adds a new REST API and custom post type that stores site-wide content standards -such as voice and tone, structure, accessibility requirements, linking practices, and image guidance.

In many organizations, these guidelines exist in separate documents or internal manuals. By storing them within WordPress itself, the platform creates a central reference point that can be used by authors, editors, plugins, and eventually AI tools.

The idea is to give publishing tools clear instructions about how content should be written and structured. While the feature is not limited to AI use, it could play an important role in guiding automated writing tools so that generated content remains consistent with a site’s editorial standards.

Collaboration and Additional Improvements

The release also turns real-time collaboration on by default, aligning Gutenberg with the expected behavior of WordPress 7.0.

However, the change respects existing user settings and does not override intentional configuration choices.

Beyond these headline features, Gutenberg 22.7 includes numerous bug fixes and smaller enhancements that further refine the editing experience.

Taken together, the update reflects WordPress’ gradual shift toward a more intelligent publishing environment. While the current improvements focus on usability, the underlying changes suggest that AI-assisted writing and editing tools could soon become a standard part of the WordPress workflow.
