According to WhatsApp:

“Passkeys will allow you to use your fingerprint, face, or screen lock code to encrypt your chat backups instead of having to memorize a password or a cumbersome 64-digit encryption key. Now, with just a tap or a glance, the same security that protects your personal chats and calls on WhatsApp is applied to your chat backups so they are always safe, accessible and private.”

Balancing Privacy and Regulatory Challenges

WhatsApp’s emphasis on security of data continues despite demands from regulators for backdoor access to chats that are private. 

Although this new Passkey feature improves security, it also could increase debates about granting police access to the app amid worries about the use of WhatsApp.

There is evidence that suggests some criminal groups operate through WhatsApp and are causing demands for oversight by regulators.
