Threads Introduces 10K Character Text Extension for Posts

Threads Launches 10K Character Text Expansion

Threads now allows up to 10,000 characters per post, expanding creative freedom for users to enhance long-form content and engagement on the platform.

Following initial testing last week, Threads has officially added its new text expansion feature, allowing users to add one more in-stream text note of up to 10,000 words updates in Threads.

A Blog-Style Addition to Threads

As you may notice in these sample screens, the longer text attachment feature of Threads, which is available through a new icon in the post composer, will bring you to a blog-like editor where you can create another text note.

The separate text note will then be included in your post, and will be available to Threads viewers through a “Read more” button.

According to Threads:

“There are many ways to share your perspective on Threads, but we’ve noticed people expressing themselves with screenshots of longer content from books, articles, newsletters, podcast transcripts, and more when 500 characters isn’t enough. To address this, we’re rolling out a way to attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a post. Any attached text can be read directly in Threads to help you convey more complex perspectives, draw your audience in, and promote your work.”

Which could be more blog-like than a thread. Actually, the inclusion of longer text updates completely nullifies the idea of threads, but that is just being pedantic about naming.

Linking to Other Sources

On top of that, Threads also aims to simplify the connection to other sources with these additions:

“If you’re sharing or previewing content from other platforms on Threads, you can include a link to the full content in the body of your main post.”

In fact, the exact opposite of what X has in its more protracted posting option, which is available to X Premium subscribers.

The text expansion composer of X, which allows its users to add text attachments of up to 25k characters, is not supposed to include off-platform links at all, as it encourages the author to write their entire articles in the application.

Encouraging External Linking

Threads apparently is trying to encourage external linking, whereas Threads has also repeatedly stated that it does not penalize the reach of posts that contain links, unlike other sites.

This new posting feature, then, may be another thing to invite more discussion in the a-p, and push more traffic to your work.

This might be a nice solution to assist bloggers and writers with their audience, on and off platform, by helping them create interest by providing more context.

Potential Impact and User Adoption

It is a fascinating addition, and it may have a lot of potential, so long as the users of Threads become familiar with it and embrace it. We do not know anything about the performance of longer updates on X, so we cannot make a direct comparison.

However, when Threads users are warmed to these updates, that could aid in further motivating all new user actions, as well as providing the Threads algorithm with additional information to operate on in terms of individual user preferences and interests.

It is all about what the Threads audience reacts to and how behaviors are motivated by these longer text attachments. However, it is certainly a better method than text screenshots (not read by the Threads algorithm), and is eventually beneficial.

The 10,000-character text expansion is now available to all users with the latest version of the Threads app, opening new possibilities for content depth and engagement within the platform.

Final Thought

This development marks a notable shift in Threads’ content capabilities, potentially transforming the platform from brief updates to a space balanced between quick posts and in-depth storytelling. For many creators, this could be a game-changer in audience building and engagement.
