Threads Introduce ‘Ghost Posts’ Disappearing Updates
Threads introduce ‘Ghost Posts’ disappearing updates, a feature that allows users to publish temporary content that disappears after a certain time limit.
After numerous sightings in testing during the last few months, Threads has officially rolled out its latest feature “Ghost Posts,”. These are updates that are designed to disappear within 24 hours in the application.
How Ghost Posts Work
Although these posts are removed from view after one day, they’re automatically archived and are available to the user. Inside, Threads likely uses these archives to adjust its algorithm to your activities and interests.
The brief exposure could inspire users to voice more openly or with greater conviction without the worry of enduring negative consequences.

User Experience and Limitations
The interface for writing now comes with an option to change to an option called a Ghost Post, which alters how your posting appears on the screen signalling that it’s only temporary.
As with regular posts, it is not possible to include images or photos in these temporary updates. In addition, although you may modify the original post but editing the responses to Ghost Posts is not permitted. Also, if your threads account is linked to the Fediverse network, Ghost Posts won’t be posted on the Fediverse.
Ghost Posts appear in your feed using the distinctive speech bubble design to indicate their indefinite nature. After posting, they are displayed in a specific tab on your profile.
They automatically disappear within 24 hours. Responses to these posts will appear in your inbox and allow for ongoing engagement regardless of when the posting has been deleted publicly.
Meta’s Strategy to Reduce Posting Pressure
Meta hopes that this change will reduce the stress about social sharing. Many users are reluctant to post frequent personal updates because of concerns about repercussions or judgement for their thoughts.
This skepticism has led to an ebb in social media sharing, something that was once the main draw for these social media platforms.

Based on the data Meta’s internal database provided during its defense against the FTC’s antitrust suit the engagement of users with friends’ content has decreased steadily. This kind of interaction only makes up a small portion of time spent using Meta’s applications.
Potential Impact on User Behavior
The introduction of short-term posts may ease some of the post pressure. Some users may be more comfortable sharing their thoughts knowing they won’t be indelibly re-posting.
This could encourage more freedom of communication and deeper conversations on Threads as compared with other social media platforms.
Change from Auto-Archiving Ghost Posts
Temporary posts were considered during Threads development. Instagram’s chief Adam Mosseri previously discussed ideas regarding auto-deletion or auto-archiving of posts.
He considered the possibility that Threads should be able to automatically archive all content following the set amount of period of. Although such a broad method was not well-liked by users, Threads launched an optional auto-archive option that allows users to remove posts after a certain time.
Ghost Posts are the next stage, providing an alternative to forced archiving, and encouraging specific content to be temporary.
Looking Forward
The idea of posts disappearing isn’t entirely new. Snapchat was the first to popularize this idea which proved its popularity for sharing that is ephemeral and has the degree of denial.
Threads seek to use this feature to create more inclusive and lively conversations. But, changing user behavior towards active social sharing can be a challenge, since most people now see social media mostly as entertainment platforms.
Bottom Line
This new feature seems to be a promising introduction. By reducing the pressure on posting and encouraging ephemeral content, Threads might become a lively space for real discussion and fresh perspectives.
