Snapchat Rolls Out First Open Prompt AI Lens
Snapchat rolls out its first AI Lens powered by an open prompt. Users can now type any idea to instantly generate a custom augmented reality experience.
Snapchat is continuing its progress in generative AI advancements with the newly launched “Imagine” Lens, which enables users to transform images from the Snap camera or their camera roll into a lens with specific text prompts of their choice.
Imagine Lens Overview
As you can see in this example, it offers an impression of AI use for imagining a difference for your selfies and different pics, like Meta’s “Imagine Yourself” AI option, YouTube’s “Dream Screen”, TikTok’s “AI Self” feature, and Snapchat’s personal previous “Dreams” AI option, the Imagine Lens is a modern way to rework self-portraits.
As Snap explains:
“Today we’re introducing the Imagine Lens, our first Open Prompt Image Generation Lens. With the Imagine Lens, Snapchatters can create, edit, and recreate Snaps simply by entering their own prompts, then seamlessly share them with friends, post to their Story, or outside of Snapchat.”
While the Dreams Lens, which debuted in 2023, automatically creates alternative scenarios without user input, the Imagine Lens allows users to guide the AI to input a descriptive message, akin to a ‘thank you for your input’ message.

Reimagining Yourself Through AI
The new generative AI tool lets Snapchat users re-envision themselves in any creative context, including in astronaut suits, as cowboys, and in any other context we can think of.
AI-generated versions of yourself can be fun and all, but these images are not representations of real moments. However, that raises the question of relevance, considering social media typically works when people are genuinely sharing something personal and connecting with others.
The ultimate question, of course, will be how interested users will be in these AI-generated self-portraits that neither feature nor reflect real human experiences or viewpoints. Perhaps the real social value is not in fantasy remakes, but in pragmatic, everyday mods.
Practical Uses and Customization Potential
Imagine Lens users can experiment with realistic or fun changes, trying on new hairstyles, testing Halloween costume ideas, or exploring subtle style tweaks, thanks to its open-prompt approach.

Even if it is just extra customization (hopefully more than just a gimmick, still positioning the feature as a creative tool), this flexibility might provide even greater value. Imagine Lens is currently only available to Lens+ and Snapchat+ Platinum subscribers.
Final Thought
Snapchat’s Imagine Lens suggests an interesting avenue for creativity in self-expression. Still, the feature’s eventual social implications will depend on whether users prefer AI-driven identity personalization over authentic narrative.
