Snapchat Shares Insights Into the Key Drivers of Audience Attention
Snapchat, in its latest report, reveals the most important factors that attract and retain the attention of the audience.
Snapchat has published a new report providing insight into how various types of content capture and deter viewers’ attention. The study provides useful advice for businesses looking to maximize their advertising performance and better connect with users.
Study Overview
In order to determine those factors that attract and retain the attention of the audience, this study was carried out in collaboration with WPP and Lumen which focused on 3,000 Indian smartphone users.
According to Snap:
“Lumen’s proprietary technology measured visual attention across major digital platforms. In a controlled ‘sandbox,’ WPP brands across categories – FMCG, Auto, Quick Service Restaurant and Fashion – ran ads from a single campaign, delivering striking insights.”
Lumen’s strategy combined eye-tracking statistics and follow-up surveys to measure the extent to which users were engaged by both ads and content.
Key Findings on Audience Attention Patterns
Key findings of this report reveal:
Attention Is Failing: The majority of viewers are focused on only the first 2 seconds of an advertisement. Yet, Gen Z users tend to spread their attention over a longer duration.

This could be a reflection of changing cognitive patterns that are shaped by our digital landscape.
Attracting attention quickly is crucial: Advertisers have a small window of opportunity to create a lasting impression. If you can capture that initial interest, your chances of generating profitable brand results rise significantly.

More focus generally means ‘More Business Success’: While not a 100% guarantee, increased engagement levels closely correlate with a positive brand performance.
Based on the findings, the report also provides an overview of the key drivers of attention.

Snapchat’s Strength as an Engagement Driver
It is not surprising that the report focuses on Snapchat itself as a significant user of engagement.

Since the report is an official Snap study, there is a certain amount of bias, but the results point to the relative success of Snap in retaining the attention of users in comparison to other social media platforms.
Practical Tips for Creating Impactful Snapchat Ads
The report also provides practical tips for creating more engaging Snap ads.

It also describes the ways that different types of content influence the attention of viewers.

While the research is focused on Indian users, the findings will be useful for marketers worldwide, given universal trends in digital behaviour.
Personal Take
This study is a good reminder that content formatting and timing are important. Also, this study highlights how people are focusing on content, which in turn can help you improve the effectiveness of your promotional strategy.
