Snapchat Introduces Infinite Retention and Group Streaks

Snapchat introduces infinite Retention and Group Streaks features to increase the user’s engagement and make conversations more active for longer.

Snapchat has launched some new features that are designed to increase engagement regularly and support group chats on the application, which include: 

• Infinite Retention 
• Group Streaks

Infinite Retention Overview

Infinite Retention lets users save chats for a lifetime within the app, which is a change from Snapchat’s usual emphasis on short-lived content. This feature is in response to users‘ requests for the ability to store conversations forever.

Snapchat Explains:

“We’ve often heard from our community that Snapchatters want to save their chats forever. Infinite Retention can now be enabled for each individual conversation, and everyone receives a clear notification when the setting changes.”

Although this change is a departure from Snapchat’s initial disappearing message concept, it also formalizes the option that some users already could activate. 

In the year 2012, Snapchat began letting users choose “Never delete” for the purpose of archiving messages, basically making Snapchat’s messaging capabilities more compatible with the more conventional direct-messaging apps.

Impact on Snapchat’s Identity

Infinite retention expands to give users the option of controlling their conversations in-app. However, this change could obscure Snapchat’s primary selling point of a fleeting, temporary connection. 

When you think about the way that users interact with the app, having a way to keep conversations is a good idea for a lot of users.

The extent to which this feature strengthens Snapchat’s brand image is a matter of debate; however, there is indeed a need for this service.

Group Streaks Overview

The latest update adds the Group Streaks, which extend Snapchat’s wildly popular streaks mechanic to chats with groups.

Snapchat claims:

“Group Streaks will continue as long as most of the members participate, so it’s easy to keep it going. Like other Streaks, they are entirely optional, and private, and you can restore the Streak within a week of when it ended if you want to keep it going.”

This feature allows for collective participation which could improve retention in chats in groups by adding an element of competition and social. Snapchat states that many groups have lengthy chats, which makes this an excellent new feature.

Snapchat’s Broader Strategy

These two features represent relatively minor functional shifts in Snapchat’s environment. Yet Infinite Retention is particularly significant because it is a considerable departure from Snap’s fading messages’ beginnings.

As Snapchat continues to look for new ways to grow and ways to improve the user experience, we can expect to see more experiments with innovative features that are interactive and also offer social rewards.
