Why It Matters?

This update responds to an ongoing demand from advertisers for a more efficient control over advertising placements. It’s especially crucial in the present context, where brand security and privacy are among the top priorities.

Advertisers have the ability to control their exclusions on a large scale, making sure that advertisements don’t show up on unapproved websites.

What’s Changing?

Microsoft Ads has revamped its exclusion controls using an adjustable, tiered system:

  • At the Account Level: Make and maintain exclusion lists on the level of the manager account.
  • Campaign Level: Include exclusions lists in the campaign settings.
  • Ad Group Level: Exclusions are still available on this point; however, Microsoft recommends managing exclusions at the campaign-level to ensure the same consistency.

The Bigger Picture

This is an important step towards centralizing control of the placement of ads in all forms. First time ever, marketers are able to use the tools for both Search and Audience Ads, providing them with complete control over the places where their ads are displayed.

What’s Next?

Microsoft is testing a newly developed “Targeted Website List” feature. Advertisers who are interested in early access should talk for their Microsoft representative.

Final Thoughts

The current update provides advertisers with greater control over brand safety as well as campaign optimization. With the capability to expand and implement exclusions with greater ease, companies can now achieve a higher performance with less manual effort.
