Instagram Introduces Re-Posts, Friend Map, and Exciting New Features

Instagram Launches Re-Posts

Instagram has released some exciting new features that have been in the making for some time, such as Re-posts, the Friend Map, and a new “Friends” tab in Reels.

Instagram has recently introduced three new features. Each will improve the user experience. Some of which could have profound changes to how your interactions with the application.

Reposts: A New Sharing Option

Perhaps the most talked-about change Re-posts are now accessible. This was a long-awaited feature, but Instagram has resisted adding a re-posting option for years due to fears that it would limit original content creation

The concept is straightforward, that users are now able to repost feed posts and public reels to share them with their friends. Re-posts will be displayed in a different tab on your profile and will be displayed in the feeds of your followers.

As Instagram explains :

“With reposts, you can repost public reels and feed posts, making it easier for you to share your interests with your friends. Reposts will be recommended to your friends’ and followers’ feeds, and they’ll also be in a separate tab on your profile, so you can always go back to revisit your reposts.”

In these examples, you’ll notice that reposts now show the profile photo of the user with a purple icon for reposting. Instagram has also introduced Reposts as a separate tab for profiles that displays the content that a user has posted, along with any added comments.

This shift could dramatically alter Instagram’s dynamic, mixing artificial intelligence-generated Reels along with reposts you’ve received from your networks. Instagram has been slowly making progress in this direction. Earlier this year, Instagram included a new prompt to see Reels that your friends have liked, while it first began live testing of re-posts back in March.

Instagram confirms that the original creators have the proper credit for the content they share:

“If you’re a creator, this means that if your content is reposted by someone else, it may be recommended to that person’s followers, even if those people don’t follow you. This gives creators a new opportunity to reach more people whenever you create something worth sharing.”

Instagram is presenting this as an opportunity for creators as a way to broaden their reach. This is in line with the Meta’s latest report which reported that more than two-thirds of the suggested U.S. Instagram content now originates from original content. This feature of ‘repost’ could be an additional element in the strategy to boost original creators, and strengthen ties with the most influential users.

It is also ironic that Instagram had a hard time with this for many years but then embraced it later. However, with less users creating original content on a daily basis it is possible that the threat of limiting creativity isn’t as urgent.

Finally, Meta has weighed the options and determined that the positives for creators is more than the disadvantages. A change that could alter the way we use Instagram.

Friend Map: A Snap Map Alternative

The next feature is ‘Friend Map’ that is alternative of Instagram’s version of Snapchat’s most popular feature, ‘Snap Map’. This feature allow users find their friends and where they are at any given time.

As you can see from this example that Instagram’s new Friends Map feature appears in the Notes feed at the top of your inbox. When activated, it displays all friends who’ve enabled location sharing in the app.

“You can opt into sharing your last active location with friends you pick, and you can turn it off anytime. You can also open the map to see content your friends and favorite creators are posting from cool spots. No matter how you use the map, you and your friends have a new, lightweight way to connect with each other.”

It also allows you to tag posts, stories Reels, Notes, and more. The map is accessible via the Notes feed at on top of your email. It’s an efficient method of staying connected.

Instagram is formally launching the Snap Map app in its version. Snap Map that could be very beneficial, particularly considering that Snap’s feature for location boasts more than 400 million users per month.

Instagram has been carefully working on this for more than a year, the first tests were found in the month of November 2023, and live trials starting August last year. After working on security measures (which they’re focusing on heavily), Instagram is now fully prepared for the full launch.

The key features include:

  • Only for locations that are shared with an opt-in partner.
  • Granular privacy control
  • Accessible via your Notes feed

Although it’s evidently influenced by Snapchat the implementation of Instagram is more measured, likely gaining from its experience of addressing concerns regarding location sharing on social media platforms.

Instagram has also added privacy controls, which allow users to control who can be able to see their location, and if they want to share their location at all. Parents are also in charge of their children’s location sharing and sharing, which is a wise decision for safety of the family.

It is important because:

“If you use location sharing, your location is updated whenever you open the app or return to the app if it’s been running in the background.”

However, just like Snapchat the map updates automatically every time you open the app. If you decide to sign up make sure you are aware of that.

Friends Tab in Reels: Customizing Your Feed

The third function is the inclusion of the “Friends” tab in the Reels feed. The tab will display the public Reels content which your friends have interacted with. It could also contain suggestions from your shared interests or Blends that you have started.

This follows Instagram’s back in January feature, which showcased Reels that your friends enjoyed. The feature has seen a significant engagement through recommendations from friends, Instagram is now expanding the concept of the “Friends” feed.

As seen in the screenshots above, the new feed will appear in the upper right-hand corner of your screen, like TikTok’s layout, but with one major differentiator as it is a mix of posts of friends as well as content they’ve enjoyed.

Privacy controls let users:

  • Choose which content you like is available publicly
  • Recommendations to mute from accounts that are not as relevant

The latest move is Instagram’s attempt to increase discovery via social connections and not just through algorithms. This could lead to new avenues for engagement around common passions.

This will affect how you find content, since the focus is on your social group’s interests. This could make the feed appear more personal. Instagram also gives users control over the content that appears in their feeds, such as an option to turn off relevant content. This is intended to make the process of discovering more enjoyable while respecting each individual’s preferences.

Overall Impact

The updates, though not brand new in a sense that they have been under test for some time are now accessible to everyone. They will bring Instagram close to features of other platforms such as Snapchat and TikTok which are platforms where social interactions and the discovery of content are firmly integrated.

Will these new features receive a larger user base or not is yet to be determined however, they may alter the way users utilize Instagram particularly in the area of sharing content and discovering.

Future Implications

For content creators and businesses, these updates may provide new opportunities to engage and connect with their followers, particularly via re-posts and using the Friend Map.

But, users will have adapt their methods of the privacy of sharing and confidentiality, particularly when it comes to tracking location.

Overall, Instagram is continuing to change, and how you react to these changes can affect your approach to the platform. Pay attention to the performance of these features in the future.
