Google Acknowledges Testing AI Generated Snippets But Missing AI Label A Bug
Google acknowledges testing AI-generated snippets, confirming a missing AI label, a bug that is currently being addressed.
Google is actively testing AI-powered snippet summaries, descriptions and snippets within search results. This is a step designed to enhance user experience by providing clearer explanations. In the past, these snippets generated by AI were adorned with the Gemini logo, which clearly indicated their source.
But recent reports show that certain AI-generated descriptions are not sporting the standard AI label, which raises questions about transparency.
Confirmation by Google on Missing AI Label
Rajan Patel from Google addressed the issue of X in a statement, saying that the snippets generated by AI without labels were created as part of an ongoing project which may not be launched.
He also explained that the lack of an AI icon in certain cases is a glitch which Google will fix in the near future.
SEO Expert Highlights Unmarked AI Snippets
SEO Analyst Brodie Clark revealed this issue on X and pointed out that:
“Google is now testing AI-generated page snippets that are unmarked.”
He further added:
“But this is the first time we’ve seen Google develop summaries in this way for a page without clearly labelling it to users with an AI-related icon,”
The transparency of AI output is vital and this method of not labeling can confuse those who rely on the clear identification of content.

Example of AI-Generated Snippet Discrepancies
An example of a practical application showed the snippet of code generated by AI for JavaScript sources:
“Learn JavaScript by building projects, reading documentations, and practicing. Resources like O’Reilly books, Packt, and JavaScript.info are recommended,”
Although the snippet was not labeled when viewed on a desktop however, the mobile version did display the correct AI label, which confirmed Google’s inconsistent behavior across all platforms.

Google’s Plan to Fix Labeling Bug
Rajan Patel has confirmed on X, the nature of the test as well as the labeling issue, saying:
“It’s both an experiment we haven’t launched yet (and not sure we’ll launch it) and a bug we’ll fix to make it look more like what you see on mobile.”
The company is dedicated to resolving this problem, and will ensure that users receive clearly defined indicators when they interact with AI-generated content.
