Google Ads Hover Pop-Ups and Stronger Link Icons

Google announces that its search engine will present links through more prominent displays within its AI-related search results.

Google introduces hover-based pop-up elements together with enhanced link display options through its website.

The update has modified its link display system, which shows links in AI-generated results that users find in Search. This new feature applies to both AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Robby Stein, Vice President of Product for Google Search, shared the news on X. He said Google is rolling out a redesigned link experience for AI Overviews and AI Mode to make sources clearer and easier to access.

Users on desktop will experience linked content through a pop-up window, which displays grouped links when they hover over it.

Users will see a panel that displays site information when they hover their cursor over a citation area. The display includes the site name and favicon together with a brief description. This helps users check the source before they click.

Google will implement larger link display elements together with more detailed link icons in its AI-generated responses to users.

The new features will be accessible to users on both desktop and mobile platforms. Stein said early tests show the design is “more engaging”, enabling users to navigate useful content across the web simultaneously.

Research Shows Fewer Clicks With AI Summaries

The update comes as several studies show that AI summaries change how people click search results.

The Pew Research Center study published in July 2025 examined over 68000 Google search queries. The research found that users clicked traditional search results during 8% of their visits after an AI Overview was shown to them.

Users clicked on results 15 percent of the time when there was no AI Overview. Users clicked links that appeared in the AI summary 1 percent of the time.

The pattern discovered in previous research appears again in new studies. The analysis of 300000 keywords by Ahrefs showed that the first organic result experienced a 58 percent decrease in click-through rate when users searched for queries that activated AI Overviews during that time period.

The GrowthSRC Media analysis of 200000 keywords found that AI Overviews led to a 32 percent decrease in click-through rates for top organic results, which dropped from 28 percent to 19 percent.

The Reuters news agency reported on its own findings in July 2025. It said that independent publishers in the European Union filed an antitrust lawsuit.

The publishers claimed that AI Overviews decrease user traffic because users receive answers through AI Overviews without needing to click on content.

Ongoing Transformations of AI Search Technologies

The search engine company, Google, has made multiple changes to AI Overviews throughout the last twelve months.

The system introduced these features, which included inline links and desktop link carousels, before the current update.

The new hover previews, together with stronger icons, represent the next stage in that development. The impact of these modifications on publisher’s website traffic will become evident as we get more data on it.
