Google Links AI Overviews To AI Mode On Mobile

Google links AI Overviews to AI Mode on mobile, enabling users to access richer, AI-driven summaries directly within their mobile search experience.

Google is experimenting with a new mobile search experience that lets users move directly from AI Overviews into AI Mode without leaving the results page. The test aims to make it easier to ask follow-up questions conversationally, turning what starts as a standard query into a deeper AI-driven session in just a tap.

What’s Changing In The Search Flow

Robby Stein, Google Search’s VP of Product, announced the test on X, noting that the feature allows users to ask follow-up questions within AI Mode without leaving the search results page.

Right now, AI Overviews and AI Mode behave as two separate experiences in Google Search. As you can see, an AI Overview is at the top of results for eligible queries, but if you want AI Mode’s full conversational capabilities, you have to switch out of the regular search view.

In the new test, you still get an AI Overview as your starting point, but you can then ask follow-up questions that open directly in AI Mode from the same results page.

Google’s Vision According to Stein

Announcing the test on X, Stein said:

“This brings us closer to our vision for Search: just ask whatever’s on your mind, no matter how long or complex, and find exactly what you need. You shouldn’t have to think about where or how to ask your question.”

He further describes the result as:

“One seamless experience: a quick snapshot when you need it, and deeper conversation when you need it.”

The test is running globally on mobile devices, reinforcing Google’s strategy of making AI-powered answers feel like a natural extension of core Search rather than a separate destination.

AI Mode uses a custom Gemini-based model to run multiple searches in parallel and synthesize richer responses, especially for complex tasks.

Why This Matters For SEO And Traffic

From a search and SEO perspective, this experiment is another step toward a more unified AI-first interface.

If this flow becomes the default, more user journeys could evolve inside AI Mode, with follow-up questions resolved within AI-generated responses instead of through additional clicks on traditional blue links.

That could mean fewer visits to publisher and brand sites for certain query types, especially those where a synthesized answer and a handful of citations are enough for the user.

At the same time, Google continues to show links alongside AI responses, so the practical impact will likely vary by vertical and query intent.

What To Expect Next

Google hasn’t committed to a rollout timeline beyond stating that this is a global test on mobile. Historically, the company tends to run such experiments for months, measure engagement and satisfaction, and then decide whether to expand, tweak or shelve the experience.

Whether this specific UI test leads to a fully merged AI interface is still an open question, but the direction of travel is clear: Google is making it easier to stay within AI-powered responses once you’ve started there.

Final Thought

For marketers and site owners, it is another signal to monitor AI Overviews and AI Mode closely and to ensure content still earns visibility in the citations that sit inside these new experiences.
