Google Is Not Limiting The Use Of Structured Data

Google confirms it is not limiting the use of structured data in 2026, emphasizing continued support for rich results and improved search visibility for websites.

A recent Google developer blog post sparked confusion, leading some to believe that structured data use would sharply decline in 2026. This misunderstanding arose from a Reddit discussion where a user questioned the future relevance of schema markup based on the announcement.

Reddit Question Sparks Concern Over Schema’s Future

The Redditor posted the following:

“Google just posted a new update — they’re removing support for some structured data types starting in January 2026. Dataset already works only in Dataset Search, and rich results are getting more selective.

So… is schema still worth it? Or are we moving past it entirely?”

The Reality Behind Google’s Announcement

Matt Southern’s coverage of the blog post, titled “Google Deprecates Practice Problem Structured Data In Search“, highlighted that Google was phasing out only a small set of less-used structured data types.

Authored by John Mueller, Google’s blog post aimed to clarify the update but risked being misinterpreted as more drastic than intended.

Google’s Intent: Simplify Search While Keeping What Works

Google explained:

“We’re constantly working to simplify the search results page, so that it’s quick and easy to find the information and websites you’re looking for. As part of this effort, we regularly evaluate all of our existing features to make sure they’re still useful, both for people searching on Google and for website owners.

Through this process, we’ve identified some features that aren’t being used very often and aren’t adding significant value to users. In these cases, we’ve found that other advancements on the search results page are able to get people what they’re looking for more seamlessly. So we’re beginning to phase these lesser-used features out.

For most searches, you likely won’t notice a major difference — most of these features didn’t trigger often and weren’t interacted with much by users. But overall, this update will simplify the page and improve the speed of search results.”

The update also includes:

“Starting in January 2026, we’ll remove support for the structured data types in Search Console and its API.”

Continuous Evolution of Google Search Features

A community response reassured that Google’s search features and associated structured data are always evolving.

Indeed, Google Search undergoes constant transformation, especially with the rise of AI-driven search experiences.

John Mueller himself confirmed this fluidity on Reddit, saying:

“Exactly. Understand that markup types come and go, but a precious few you should hold on to (like title, and meta robots).”

Simplified Structured Data Management for Publishers

Most website owners don’t need to worry about these changes in detail. Modern content management systems, including popular platforms like WordPress, handle Schema.org structured data automatically via plugins or built-in tools.

These tools stay aligned with Google’s evolving guidelines. Keeping plugins updated generally ensures compliance without requiring manual intervention.
