Google Rolls Out AI Previews To Discover, Sports Feed Coming

Google Adds AI Previews To Discover, Sports Feed Coming

Google rolls out AI previews to Discover, with a new AI-powered Sports Feed also on the way to deliver personalized game insights.

Google releases AI-upgraded mobile version of its Discover feed, plans “What’s new” sports search experience. Google today introduced two new ways for users to see more news about their search, discover and watch the latest highlights of trending sports events, and learn what people are saying.

Enhanced AI Previews in Discover

Now with AI-driven snippets in Discover, the redesigned Discover feed includes short, informative snaps that serve up bite-sized news summaries based on your interests. These snippets can be expanded by increments to view more specific content and links to related material further down the web.

Google states:

“We’ve rolled out an upgraded AI-powered feature in Discover that helps you stay up to date on trending topics you care about. It’ll show brief previews that you can expand to see more information, plus links to continue exploring content on the web.”

Launched in the U.S., South Korea, and India for now, this shift is meant to make it easier to catch news from a variety of publishers and creators.

New “What’s New” Button for Sports Searches

Google will also roll out a “What’s new” button for sports queries on mobile that unveils a dedicated feed of trending updates, highlights, and fresh articles about teams and players.

Google explains:

“Soon, when you look up players or teams on your phone, a ‘What’s new’ button will reveal a feed of trending updates and articles to help you catch up on the latest action.” Google notes the feature “will begin rolling out in the U.S. in the coming weeks.”

This new feature is set to roll out in the U.S. over the next few weeks, creating a single, fast way for sports fans to keep up with all of their games without having to jump between apps or sites.

Looking Ahead

Both the AI previews in Discover and the sports feed expand content discovery opportunities beyond traditional search and static Discover tiles.

For publishers specializing in sports or trending lifestyle content, these features present new touchpoints to engage audiences who may first encounter content via AI-generated summaries before delving into full articles.

The AI-generated Discover previews are now live in three countries, while “What’s new” sport feed is launching imminently in the U.S., with no word on when it might go global.

Final Thought

With Google embedding AI more and more into content surfacing, publishers need to watch this space and, in particular, focus on optimising for visibility within emerging search/discovery experiences.
