Google Brings in the New Labels to Flag AI Content in the Forums and Q&A Pages

Sites can now go on to tell Google if the content is written by humans or is machine-crafted

Google has now rolled out a quiet but important update to how forum and Q&A pages can be structured behind the scenes.

The company is now allowing websites to clearly state whether a piece of content is written by a person or is generated by a machine, most often than not.

A Simple Way to Identify AI Content

The key addition to all this is a new field called digitalSourceType. It gives site owners a new way to label the origin of posts, answers, and comments.

There are two main options. One is for the content created by advanced AI systems such as the language models. The other is meant for simpler automated tools, like the bots that go on to post quick replies.

The fields are not compulsory. If a site chooses not to use it, Google will assume that the content is written by a human. This can mean that nothing breaks for existing pages.

Adding More Depth to Conversations

Google has also introduced a commentCount field. This goes on to help websites show the full number of comments on a post, even if some of these are hidden or split across pages.

For Q&A pages, there is now clearer guidance. The total number of answers and comments seen can now match the overall reply count. This gives a better sense of how active a discussion is online.

Smarter Handling of Shared Posts

Another update focuses on shared content. Websites can now be more specific when marking posts that include links, images, videos, or even reused comments from other threads.

There is also a small shift in how the images are handled. Google now prefers that preview images for links sit within the shared content section, and not in the main image field.

What It Means for Publishers?

Nothing in this update is mandatory. Sites can go on to adopt the new features at their own pace. But the change hints at a bigger shift.

As AI-generated content becomes more and more common, Google seems keen to understand where this content is coming from and how it is created.
