ChatGPT Is Driving Less Traffic To Websites – Down 52% In A Month

chatGPT Is Driving Less Traffic To Websites

Latest data reveals that ChatGPT is driving drastically less traffic to websites, with a staggering 52% drop in just one month.

Recent analysis has shown the fact that Reddit and Wikipedia have emerged as the main sources of citations by ChatGPT as OpenAI explores the possibility of the importance of “answer-first” content in its citation weighting. This is affecting patterns of referral traffic across the internet.

Drop in Referral Traffic from ChatGPT

As per Josh Blyskal from Profound, who has studied more than 1 billion ChatGPT citations as well as 1 million referrer visits that span different industries, suggests that referral traffic from ChatGPT to other websites has decreased by 52% since July 21. This indicates the consolidation of sources of citation.

The data of Blyskal reveals some interesting shifts since late July, which include:

  • On Reddit, the number of citations increased by 87% from July 23, which now accounts for more than 10% of overall ChatGPT citations.
  • Wikipedia recorded an increase of 62% from the low of July and a whopping 13% of the citation share.
  • Along with TechRadar, these three websites are responsible for 22% of all the citations, which is a growth of 53% within only one month.

ChatGPT has been gaining favour with a smaller category of “answer-first” platforms such as Reddit and Wikipedia, which are experiencing a decrease in visibility and are losing millions of clicks that could be referred to.

This suggests an increasing preference for sites that offer direct, real-time answers instead of marketing-driven and conversion-driven content.

Broader Implications for Brands

Blyskal insists that this change is not a result of the release of GPT-5 on the 7th of August. Instead, the consolidation of citations started a few weeks earlier, which suggests OpenAI had to manually adjust its retrieval system in order to provide better, more precise responses.

On LinkedIn post, Blyskal highlighted:

  • Branded content that is geared towards conversion (‘Schedule Demo’) is getting passed over.
  • Answer-first platforms such as Reddit and Wikipedia are the most popular since they directly address the needs of users.

Blyskal further wrote:

“The citation opportunity is massive for brands willing to shift from conversion first to answer first content,”

This is a pivotal moment for brands. In order to maintain the search results that are powered by AI, they must concentrate on providing precise, useful information rather than promoting messages.

Bottom Line

As ChatGPT’s role in facilitating content discovery increases, brands must think about how they design content to be relevant and visible in the changing AI landscape. The ongoing experiments of OpenAI with citation weighting may create significant traffic fluctuations for websites.

Companies that do not provide real, informative content that is focused on answering questions risk losing their position within ChatGPT’s answers, and could be pushed out of a progressively influential referral channel.
